GETChan history questions Anonymous ComradeCountry code: blank.gif, country type: blank, valid: 98504

What exactly was the United Chans in the first place? Was it a webring or something? What happened to it? Did everybody just drift away one-by-one? Was /ref/ always a part of GETChan or did it start out separately? Did GET ever reside on 8chan before moving to Bunkerchan or was it independent?

Answering questions based on bear's memory of retelling of events
>What exactly was the United Chans in the first place?
Union of different chans that had a common goal (usually anti reactionary stances)
>Was it a webring or something?
I think so
>What happened to it?
Chans died or didn't want to be on it
>Did everybody just drift away one-by-one?
Kinda
>Was /ref/ always a part of GETChan or did it start out separately?
Originally separately, /ref/ was born from /int/ on the 4, before moving it's own site and then eventually deciding to room with /GET/
>Did GET ever reside on 8chan before moving to Bunkerchan or was it independent?
Always independent!

Movements get corrupted as they grow bigger; the same happened with Reddit— refugees from Reddit moved to /b/.

Do you think there is a way to avoid this corruption?

>Do you think there is a way to avoid this corruption?
what do you mean?
/ref/ was born out of discontent with the /int/ current at the time regarding rare flags. its not the same as your comparison at all.

>What exactly was the United Chans in the first place?
Coalition of generally leftist chan sites against the overwhelming presence of rightoid spam in and around the era it was founded in.
>What happened to it?
Nominally still exists, but really its just GET and leftypol now.
>Did everybody just drift away one-by-one?
Merged into each other as userbases dwindled or people lost the capacity to support the servers or what have you.
>Was /ref/ always a part of GETChan or did it start out separately?
It merged at some point (2014 or so?) into GETchan.
>Did GET ever reside on 8chan before moving to Bunkerchan or was it independent?
It was always on this site until moving to bunkerchan due to site issues iirc. It still maintained an independent administration on bunkerchan, so at the height of bunkerchan there was basically 3 administrations on the site (site maintenance under space, leftypol peoples' champions, GET peoples' champions).

>What exactly was the United Chans in the first place?
It was an organisation started by various chans that wanted a way to reduce conflict and foster cooperation. This is because that era was a clusterfuck of interchan conflict, raids, angry typing, and splits. So it was used as a line for the staffs to talk to each other, plan events, etc.
>Was it a webring or something?
More a meeting of staffs to try and foster shared understanding, though some staffs were more invested than others. There was a homepage for it, however. Though this no longer exists.
>What happened to it?
It's dead de facto and has honestly been for years even before Pchan, the biggest member chan, shut down last month. I don't think it has been active for a very long time besides maybe the wiki.
>Did everybody just drift away one-by-one?
Eventually chans stopped joining and those which were members of it either lost interest or died off.
>Was /ref/ always a part of GETChan or did it start out separately?
It was its own site, but then suddenly died one day and the /ref/ugees came here where we gave them their own board as a continuation of the old one due to the good relations that we had at the time. And the old one just never came back, so they stayed here.
>Did GET ever reside on 8chan before moving to Bunkerchan or was it independent?
It was independent, then moved to Bunkerchan once a deal was struck with the staff there to create a united lefty chan called the USSC. The Bunkerchan staff eventually reneged on this deal and instead attempted to wrestle control over the GETchan and /leftypol/ parts of the site, leading both to split off again.

The UC wasn't really meant to be a union of lefty chans, there were some pretty reactionary chans in the bunch, such as efchan. The proposal for a united lefty chan was the USSC, but despite a deal being struck for that, Space_ and his cronies went back on the deal and we all know how that ended.

I don't think GETchan was originally commie.

Aesthetically and idealistically? yeah, 100%.
most of it was because in certain threads we were attracting posters from africa and the caribbean, and that brought in racists that just wanted to say inane racist shit, and then the janitors banned those rare flags and rangebanned entire small countries instead of banning the racists. since there were many avid flag collectors back then many got angry and so /ref/ was formed.
